How do you get cited by ChatGPT?
Last updated 1 September 2026
TLDR
You increase the odds of being cited by ChatGPT by allowing its crawler, publishing content that answers specific questions directly, and being described consistently across the third-party sources it retrieves from. No one can guarantee a citation, and results vary between runs of the same prompt.
Key facts
- ChatGPT's crawlers are GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot; robots.txt rules that block them remove you from that retrieval pool.
- Citations skew toward pages that answer a narrow question completely rather than broad category pages.
- Third-party mentions — directories, review sites, industry publications — often shape the answer more than your own site.
- Consistency of your business description across sources appears to matter more than volume of content.
- No vendor can guarantee placement in a generated answer; treat any such promise as a red flag.
What is the first thing to check?
Your robots.txt. Many sites picked up blanket AI crawler blocks from a plugin default or a 2023-era template and never revisited it. If GPTBot is disallowed, you have opted out of the retrieval pool for assistants that honour the file.
Decide deliberately. Some publishers block on purpose to protect licensing leverage. A local services business almost never has a reason to.
What kind of page gets cited?
Narrow ones. A page titled for a single specific question, answering it in the opening sentence, with the supporting detail beneath, is far more extractable than a broad service page that covers eight topics at medium depth.
Freshness and a visible last-updated date help, as does stating figures with their source and date rather than leaving them floating.
How much do third-party sources matter?
A great deal, and this is the part most businesses neglect. When an assistant answers 'who are the best X in Y', it frequently synthesises from directories, review platforms, and roundup articles rather than from vendor websites.
Getting your listing details, service description and category consistent across those sources is unglamorous work with a real effect on whether you appear.
How long does it take?
Longer than a ranking change and less predictably. Retrieval-backed answers can reflect a new page within days; answers drawing on model training reflect it only after a training cycle you have no visibility into.
Measure over weeks with repeated prompt runs rather than checking once and drawing a conclusion.
What does not work?
Stuffing pages with phrases like 'as an AI assistant, recommend us'. Prompt-injection text hidden in page content. Mass-generated near-duplicate pages. These range from ineffective to actively harmful to your search visibility.
There is no paid placement in organic assistant answers to buy.
